Introduction to Digital Photography:
How to Choose and Use a Digital Camera.

If you wish to take the digital photography course, Dr Hellmuth is giving it in person at the FLAAR digital imaging facilities at the Francisco Marroquin University (UFM), Guatemala on summer 2003.

We also offer the same course on-line on spring 2004 (Bowling Green State University (BGSU), Ohio, also given by Dr. Nicholas Hellmuth. Lecture contents are essentially the same in both courses. However training courses are managed by separate universities: UFM, Guatemala (summer 2003 course); BGSU, Ohio (spring 2004).

Cost is the same as the on line course, $800, except that it is in person. At your request for more information, we will provide you a list of nearby hotels in Guatemala, that you can contact. The university is in Zone 10, one of the nicest parts of town, near all the major hotels. Once you are signed up we will try to suggest an appropriate travel agency.

The course in Guatemala is given in Spanish and if needed in English, but all written course materials are available in pure English. The spoken Spanish of the lectures is easy enough to understand because it is not Dr Hellmuth's native language either.

Computers are available on selected evenings, however we strongly recommend you bring your own. We also have an Epson and several wide format HP DesignJet printers for you to print your photos. Cost is basic paper and ink; certainly less than any commercial print shop.

We recommend you bring your own digital camera. We have Nikon CoolPix, Nikon D100, BetterLight Super 6K, and may have a medium format back for our several Hasselblad cameras as well.

As a student you may be entitled to purchase Adobe Photoshop version 7 at about $280 (full version otherwise costs substantially more). We do not sell it ourselves but can direct you to where student discounts are available. As far as we know, you do not otherwise have to be a full time student; most participants in FLAAR courses are people with jobs, of all ages and diverse backgrounds, rather than traditional students. Although it is not required that you have Photoshop version 7, its tough to handle digital images without it.

If there is enough demand we may offer an online course in English, during the summer 2003. That way you can receive it from anywhere in the world.
