What are acid dye inks?

Acid dye inks are one of the five kinds of inkjet inks used to print onto textiles. They are printed directly to textiles with a protein base; heat is applied so the pigment adheres to the fabric, and later washed to remove the excess pigments. This sort of ink is not usable with synthetic fibers or cellulose-based materials.

What are protein-based fabrics?

These are animal derived fabrics, such as silk or wool. You can also mention leather, but this is not considered a fabric per se. Using acid dye inks you can also print onto nylon, which is a man-made fabric.

Wokflow for Acid Dye Inks

First of all, the fabrics need to be pre-treated before printing, this facilitates fixation. You donít need to do this yourself; pretreated fabrics are widely commercially available.

In the process of printing textile fabrics using acid dye inks, the ink is absorbed by the fabric.

Similar to reactive dyes, post-processing of acid dyes is accomplished by steaming and washing the fabric (with the exception of leather). This process has to be done from cold to hot temperature, not the other way around, so the ink is fixed appropriately. The down side is you need lots of water to do this.

What are the advantages of using acid dye inks?

The main advantage of acid dye inks is that they produce very bright colors which means you get very good results and can do a variety of applications.

Another advantage is the light fastness of the inks, which is significantly better than reactive inks. Prints produced using acid dyes are great for outdoors.

And finally, the wash fastness o acid dyes is great, so you can use the printed fabrics for clothing, accessories, furniture, table cloths, bedding, etc.
